The Editor’s Thoughts

Friends — October is here, and this letter has one big announcement in the saddlebag: a free western adventure series for the young people in your life, and a Christmas contest with a prize worth winning. Behind it ride the usual company: the Fed’s next meeting, the tax man’s fine print, and my radio sidekick’s straight talk on silver — especially this week, because silver has taken a tumble and the desk has two words for it: no fear. There’s news from the publishing world too — our first article is in print. Let’s ride.

The Young Rangers Ride Again — Three Free Books

Somewhere between the dime novel and the family Bible sits The Young Ranger Series — three illustrated booklets set in Silver Creek, 1879, where a masked rider called the Silver Creek Ranger and his trusted Cherokee friend Eagle Feather teach real-life money lessons to two frontier kids, Luke and Grace Carter.

The Ranger wears a white hat and a mask over old scars; as teenagers, the Ranger saved Eagle Feather from a flash flood that took Eagle Feather’s entire family and belongings, and neither has forgotten it. Together they pass on what the old Book says about honest work, saving, giving, and staying out of debt — every lesson hangs on a real Bible verse, quoted plain from the Modern English Version so your family can look every one of them up:

Three booklets — The Young Ranger’s First Dollar, The First Paycheck, and First Summer Job — each with read-aloud radio dramas too. Every bit of it is free, at silverscoreboard.com/kids. No purchase necessary, now or ever.

The Rangers Creed Christmas Contest

The corral gates open October 1 and close December 15. Young Rangers ages 8–15 read either of the first two booklets, complete the Young Ranger Challenge checklist inside, and write a one-page paper: what they learned, and how they’ll use it on their own street. A parent or grandparent submits it at silverscoreboard.com/rangers-creed.

Two winners — one Junior (ages 8–11), one Senior (ages 12–15) — each receive the official brass RANGER star badge, engraved and arriving before Christmas, plus a personal phone call from the author (with a parent on the line) and their essay published with permission. Judges look for heart, not spelling. No purchase necessary — the books are free, the contest is free, the whole trail is free.

Rushbo’s Silver Desk

The radio sidekick weighs in.

Silver has sold off hard — near $61 an ounce as we go to press, down from the mid-$60s last week and about ten percent off the summer highs. We report pullbacks straight in this letter, so let’s say it plain: that is a real shakeout. But here is what the screaming headline never tells you: for the dollar-cost-average buyer, a drop is not a loss — it is the discount you signed up for. The ounce that cost $67 in August costs $61 today. Nothing about the plan broke; the price just went on sale. No fear.

And the ground under the market has not moved. This price is running on real demand — mining supply flat, industrial offtake hungry, coins leaving the shops — not on dollar weakness. Our desk call, on the record since summer: silver closes the year between $78 and $82. Shakeouts on the way to a target surprise nobody who has ridden this trail before. Buy your ounce on schedule, count what you hold, and let the tape throw its tantrums. Financial literacy, not financial advice.

Dates That Matter — October 2026

DateTime (Central)Event
October 1—The corral gates open: the Rangers Creed Christmas Contest begins. Free to enter, ages 8–15.
October 28–29—The Federal Reserve’s next interest-rate meeting. The desk’s read: watch what they say about the economy, not just the rate.
December 1511:59 PMContest entries due.
December 22—Winners called and announced.

The Tax Corner

Keep your receipts, friends — and know this before you sell: in the eyes of the IRS, bullion and many collectible coins are collectibles, taxed at up to 28 percent long-term instead of the usual capital-gains rate. The lesson isn’t fear; it’s record-keeping. Know what you paid, know what you hold, and talk to a tax professional before you sell. Education now beats a surprise in April.

FED Watch

Chairman Warsh’s Fed holds its next meeting October 28–29, and the smart money says the statement matters more than the decision. Real interest rates — what safe bonds pay after inflation — are positive again for the first time in a generation. That’s the gravity pulling on every asset, silver included. We’ll cover the meeting in the Nightly Report the evening it ends.

Foreign Concerns & Mining Issues

Overseas, the watch word is still the Strait of Hormuz — the narrow waterway that moves a fifth of the world’s oil. Any flare-up there lifts energy costs and safe-haven demand together. On the mining side, supply remains the quiet story: mine output is steady but slow to grow, while industrial offtake — solar, electronics, everything green — keeps eating into above-ground stock. Physical scarcity is a slow tide, not a wave.

The Home Budget — Keeping the DCA Promise

The oldest promise in this letter: a little silver, regularly, beats a lot of silver rarely. Pick an amount your household budget won’t miss — five dollars, twenty, fifty — and put it to work on the same day every month, rain or shine, headline or no headline. This month’s pullback is living proof: dollar-cost averaging turns volatility from an enemy into a discount — the same ounce, marked down. The free Coin Calculator at silverscoreboard.com/calculator keeps the tally, penny-exact.

On the Newsstand — We’re Published!

“What Moves Silver? Four Forces Every Stacker Should Learn to Read” — our first article is now live on TalkMarkets, the independent markets site. Four forces, plain English, written for the families that politicians and Wall Street forgot. Read it — and if it blesses you, pass it to a friend.

Until next month: keep stacking, keep counting, and keep the faith. And get a youngster reading — the Ranger’s waiting for them at the trailhead.
